Does hypnotherapy for anxiety really work? RTT Therapist Jenni Bell explains what happens in an online Zoom session, wherever in the world you are.

If you have typed "does hypnotherapy for anxiety actually work" into Google at 2am, you are not alone, and you are not being dramatic. Anxiety has a way of making you feel like you have tried everything, read everything, and are still stuck in the same loop. So let's deal with the question properly, without the wellness-blog fluff.

I am Jenni Bell, an Advanced RTT Therapist, NLP Practitioner and Clinical Hypnotherapist, and I work with clients entirely online via Zoom, right across the UK and worldwide. I trained directly under Marisa Peer, one of the founders of Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT), and anxiety is one of the issues I work with most often. So here is what I actually tell people when they ask me this, rather than what a search engine thinks you want to hear.

Does hypnotherapy for anxiety actually work?

The honest answer is: it depends on the anxiety, the person, and the approach being used, but there is good reason to take it seriously. Hypnotherapy is increasingly recognised as a legitimate tool for anxiety and stress-related issues, and several clinical reviews have found hypnosis-based approaches can meaningfully reduce anxiety symptoms, particularly when combined with talk therapy techniques rather than used as "just relaxation."

What I see in my own practice is this: anxiety is rarely really about the thing you think it's about. The racing heart before a work meeting, the dread before social events, the constant low hum of "something is wrong" - these are usually your subconscious mind replaying an old survival strategy that made sense once, often from childhood or a specific past experience, and has simply never been updated. Talking about anxiety calmly, from your logical adult mind, often cannot reach that part of you. Hypnotherapy, when it is done properly, can.

I want to be careful here, because this matters to me as much as it should matter to you: I am not going to promise you that one session "cures" anxiety, and anyone who does promise that is overselling it. What I can tell you is that many of my clients describe a genuine, noticeable shift in how anxiety feels in their body and mind after working with me, often faster than they expected. That is their reported experience, not a guarantee, and anxiety can have many layers, so what helps one person may need to be approached differently for another.

What happens in a hypnotherapy session for anxiety?

This is the part that puts most people off before they have even tried it, usually because of stage hypnosis myths. So here is what a real session looks like.

We start with a proper conversation. Before any hypnosis happens, I need to understand your anxiety specifically: when it started, what it feels like, what triggers it, and what you have already tried. This isn't small talk, it's where a lot of the real detective work happens.

Then comes the hypnosis itself, which is simply a deeply focused, relaxed state, similar to the feeling just before you fall asleep or the absorbed feeling you get watching a film. You are not unconscious, you are not "under my control," and you will remember the session afterwards. In this relaxed state, your subconscious mind becomes more accessible, which means we can often trace anxiety back to where it actually started, rather than just managing the surface symptoms.

Finally, we work with what we find. With RTT specifically, this often means helping your subconscious update an old belief or memory that has been quietly running the anxiety programme in the background, and I will usually give you a personalised recording to listen to afterwards, because the subconscious responds well to repetition.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

This is one of the most searched questions about hypnotherapy, and understandably so. You remain fully aware and in control throughout. Hypnosis cannot make you do, say, or believe anything that conflicts with your own values, and you can bring yourself out of it at any point. Most clients describe it as one of the most relaxing experiences they've had, not something frightening or out of their control.

How many hypnotherapy sessions do you need for anxiety?

Many hypnotherapy approaches for anxiety and stress work over a course of six to eight sessions. My approach is different by design: it is built to be brief and intensive, and most of my clients have between one and three sessions rather than an ongoing weekly commitment. Some people notice a real difference in how anxiety feels after their very first session; others need the full three to work through everything thoroughly. I always assess this honestly with you rather than keeping you on a treatment plan that isn't necessary.

Why online hypnotherapy for anxiety works just as well, sometimes better

Plenty of people are sceptical, at first, that a session over Zoom can feel as effective as sitting in a room with someone. I used to wonder about this too, until I saw it play out session after session. Wider telehealth research backs this up: studies comparing video-based therapy with in-person sessions consistently find a comparable therapeutic alliance and comparable outcomes, not a watered-down version of the real thing.

There is also a simple, practical reason online can work even better for anxiety specifically. Hypnosis needs you to relax and let your guard down, and that is genuinely harder to do in an unfamiliar room with someone you have only just met, however warm they are. At home, on your own sofa, with your own cup of tea, your nervous system already knows it is safe. That familiarity removes a layer of self-consciousness before we have even started, which means we can often get to the real work faster rather than spending the first twenty minutes helping you settle into a strange environment.

I now work exclusively online via Zoom, with clients across the UK and right around the world. Location has never limited what we can achieve together, and I would rather you judge the work on how it feels than on where I happen to be based.

If you want to hear how sessions have gone for people before you, I am proud to say I have five-star reviews from clients across the UK and internationally, which you can read for yourself on Google.

If anxiety has been running your life quietly in the background for months or years, and you are tired of managing it rather than actually understanding where it came from, that is exactly the work I do.
